The Chinese Musical Instruments Workshop is primarily designed to provide composers with the tools necessary to write effectively for the ensemble. The characteristics of each instrument will be introduced as well as the techniques required to play them.

The composer Alan Lau’s presentation will be followed by the VCME’s music director Jirong Huang’s demonstration of bowed string instruments (erhu, gaohu, zhonghu and banhu). Among other exceptional musicians who will share their knowledge and skills at the workshop: Ling Yang (Chinese lute; pipa), Zhi Min Yu (plucked string instruments; zhongruan and daruan), Sarah Tan (Chinese zither; guzheng) and Zhongxi Wu (wind instruments; suona, sheng and guanzi).

Formed in 1989, the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble is the first professional Chinese music organization established in Canada. The Ensemble consists of highly accomplished instrumentalists who combine technical mastery with a passionate approach to music. Based in Vancouver, BC, they continue to inspire contemporary compositions and interdisciplinary projects for Chinese instruments in Canada.

Costumes and textiles reflect thousands of years of human creativity, cultural identity, and family histories.  In celebration of this shared experience, the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver is planning a Multicultural Costume and Textile Fest, encompassing an exhibition and related events, from January 15 to February 15, 2015.  Our goal is to express the diversity of cultures represented in B.C. and improve audiences’ understanding of each other’s arts and cultural legacy through this project, which is partially funded by the City of Vancouver.  Part One of the project is an exhibition at the Chinese Cultural Centre; Part Two is a live fashion show.

We hope to represent as many cultures as possible, and invite members of the community to participate in this event by submitting their items of traditional dress and/or textiles to a selection process for the exhibition or fashion show.  Due to limited space, we can exhibit only a limited number of items from each community, and because of this we want to display the best examples of traditional clothing and textiles.

1. Please submit your name and photos of your costumes or textiles to

2. Please indicate whether submitted items are available for the exhibition and/or fashion show (these must withstand being worn), and possibly whether you can supply a model to wear the garment at the fashion show. You can model the garment yourself.

3. Please include a paragraph in your submission telling why the item is important to you or your family.

The Curatorial Committee will inform you whether your items will be in the exhibition or fashion show by December 1st, 2014.
